2015 Specialty IPA Competition Results
Rockin' club member Mark Connors wraps up the specialty IPA comp held a couple of weeks ago with added publication of the full results.
Even though the club has just celebrated its first birthday, on Sunday the 14th June it felt like the Merri Mashers had truly become a bona fide home brew club, holding their first Vicbrew inter-club competition.
It was fitting that the newest homebrew club in Melbourne was to use one of the new categories in the 2015 BJCP style guidelines, 21B - Specialty IPA with its six subcategories of Brown, Red, White, Belgium, Rye and Black IPA. The event was held at the Terminus Hotel in Clifton Hill and the day went off without a hitch.
Justin Spicer who was the competition organiser, Kris Domagala who was the head judge and Nick Van Duyn and Mattias Isaksson who organised the stewarding were shown great support from Martin O’Connor who was the head steward and demonstrated how to run that side of the event on the day. The scoring was done by Andy Davison from the Melbourne Brewers who was very efficient with managing entries and uploading the results as soon as they came through using CompMaster. The event had just over 100 entries across the six divisions with red and brown taking 50% of all entries.
Each table/category had three judges consisting of an industry professional, a BJCP judge and a club member. We would especially like to thank all of the BJCP judges and industry professionals - Marcus Cox and Sam Slaney from Thunder Road, Brian Hardie from Kooinda, Brendan Guild from The Public Brewery, Nat Reeves from Kaiju and Brendan O'Sullivan from 3 Ravens. Without their assistance the day would not have worked so smoothly.
Maggie and Deon Smit’s collaborative beers took home the chocolates this year, sweeping the accolades with - Champion Brewer, Champion Beer and Best Novice Brewer. They scored a lofty 135.5 points (out of a possible 150 points) for their Red IPA and also won the Rye IPA category as well. Well done to Maggie and Deon!

Champion Brewer (Full Pint Cup) - The best brewer in the competition based on a point tally (3 for each first place, 2 for each second, 1 for each third).
